The meaning of Laa ilaha illallah

15 Jun

Indeed there has been an excellent example for you in Ibrahim and those with him, when they said to their people: “Verily, we are free from you and whatever you worship besides Allah, we have rejected you, and there has started between us and you, hostility and hatred forever until you believe in Allah alone”

“Moosa (Alayhi salam) said: O Lord! Teach me something that I can remember You with and I can supplicate You with. He (Ta’ala) said: Say ‘لا إله إلا الله’, O Moosa. He (Moosa) said: All your servants say this. He (Ta’ala) said: If the seven Heavens and those who dwell in them other than Me and the seven Earths are put into one pan (of the scale) and ‘لا إله إلا الله’ is put into the other; ‘لا إله إلا الله’ would be heavier.” [Ibn Hibbaan and Haakim]
‘لا إله إلا الله’ is the purpose of human existence:
وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ

And I did not create the jinn and humanity except to worship Me (alone).
This shows the importance of ‘لا إله إلا الله’. It is the greatest tragedy that a large group of people who claim to belive in ‘لا إله إلا الله’ do not even understand its meaning.

Consequently, we have ‘Muslims’ who have taken awliyaa and the quboor as gods besides Allah; we have ‘Muslim communists’, ‘Muslim democrats’; we have ‘Muslims’ helping Kuffaar invade and occupy the lands of Islam; we have ‘Muslim nationalists’ and ‘secular Muslims’; We have ‘Muslims’ seeking judgment from other than what Allah has revealed.

‘لا إله إلا الله’ is negation and affirmation – hate and love – enmity and friendship – a warning and an invitation – a sword which cuts and a rope to hold firmly to.

‘لا إله إلا الله’ negates the worship of anyone from the creation – including Muhammad, Jibreel and the Awliyaa – other than or in addition to Allah with any form of worship. It affirms worship for Allah alone.

‘لا إله إلا الله’ makes the believer hate the worship of anyone other than or in addition to Allah. ‘لا إله إلا الله’ makes the believer hate those who worship anyone other than or in addition to Allah.
‘لا إله إلا الله’ makes the believer love Allah, love Islam and love those who, like him, worship Allah alone.

The people of ‘لا إله إلا الله’ are friendly and soft among themselves and severe in enmity to the disbelievers.

The people of ‘لا إله إلا الله’ warn against Shirk and invite to Tawheed.

The essence of Tawheed is the purification of worship in all its forms to Allah alone. Among them:

The people of ‘لا إله إلا الله’ do not rely on anyone or anything except Allah alone.
The people of ‘لا إله إلا الله’ do not seek from or supplicate to anyone or anything except Allah alone.
The people of ‘لا إله إلا الله’ do not fear anyone or anything except Allah alone.
The people of ‘لا إله إلا الله’ do not hope or expect from anyone or anything except Allah alone.
The people of ‘لا إله إلا الله’ do not turn in repentance to anyone or anything except Allah alone.
The people of ‘لا إله إلا الله’ do not slaughter or make sacrifice to anyone or anything except Allah alone.
The people of ‘لا إله إلا الله’ do not pray to anyone or anything besides Allah alone.
The people of ‘لا إله إلا الله’ do not seek judgment from any source except Allah alone.
The people of ‘لا إله إلا الله’ do not humble themselves before anyone or anything except Allah alone.

The Mushrikeen – of the past and the present – confirmed belief in the oneness of Allah in His Rububiyyah:

Say: “Who provides for you from the sky and the earth Or who owns hearing and sight And who brings out the living from the dead and brings out the dead from the living And who disposes of the affairs” They will say: “Allah.” Say: “Will you not then be afraid (of Allah’s punishment)”

Yet, they will be punished by Allah on the Day of Judgment for associating partners with Him. Believing in the unity of Allah in Lordship is not sufficient to make a person a Muwahhid.

A person who believes that Allah alone is the Creator of everything that exists, that Allah alone is the sustainer of everything, that nothing happens except what is permitted by Allah alone is and remains a Mushrik as long as
he relies of ghairillah, seeks from ghairillah, supplicates to ghairillah, fears ghairillah, hopes from ghairillah, expects from ghairlillah, turns to ghairllah for repentance, slaughters to ghairillah, prays to ghairillah, seeks judgment from ghairillah or humbles himself for ghairillah or directs towards ghairillah any form of worship which is rightly directed to Allah alone.

A person who has purified his worship and made it purely for Allah alone is not a Muslim unless:

he loves Tawheed, loves the people of tawheed and allies himself with the people of Tawheed
he hates Shirk, hates the people of Shirk and disavows himself from the people of Shirk
Allah says:

Indeed there has been an excellent example for you in Ibrahim and those with him, when they said to their people: “Verily, we are free from you and whatever you worship besides Allah, we have rejected you, and there has started between us and you, hostility and hatred forever until you believe in Allah alone”

So, Allah informs us that Ibraheem `alaihis-salaam and those with him:
1: declared themselves free from the people of Shirk
2: declared themselves free from what they associate with Allah in worship
3: rejected the people of Shirk
4: are hostile to the people of Shirk
5: hate the people of Shirk
Allah mentioned the declaration of freedom from the Mushrikeen before the declaration of freedom from what they worship and hostility before hatred. This is because purifying one’s worship for Allah alone, and hating Shirk and Mushrikeen Mushrikeen in one’s heart is not sufficient – it must be accompanied by declaration of freedom from the Mushrikeen themselves and being hostile to them openly.
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. And those who are with him are severe against disbelievers, and merciful among themselves. You see them bowing falling down prostrate, seeking reward from Allah and acceptance. The mark of them is on their faces from the traces of prostration. This is their description in the Tawrah. But their description in the Injil is like a seed which sends forth its shoot, then makes it strong, and becomes thick and it stands straight on its stem, delighting the sowers, that He may enrage the disbelievers with them. Allah has promised those among them who believe and do righteous good deeds, forgiveness and a mighty reward.

So, the people of ‘لا إله إلا الله’ are those who
1: negate worship in all its forms to anyone or anything except Allah
2: hate Shirk
3: hate the people of Shirk
4: disavow themselves from the people of Shirk
5: Openly display enmity to the people of Shirk
6: love Tawheed
7: love the people of Tawheed
8: are merciful to the believers
Where are the people of ‘لا إله إلا الله’?
Who are the people of ‘لا إله إلا الله’?

They are not intimidated by shiny marble floors and intricate architecture of courthouses and palaces where fabricated laws take precedence over the Hukm of Allah. They have completely rejected fabricated laws with their hearts and tongues. They have no respect or tolerance for them. They have declared themselves free from those who rule by other than what Allah has revealed. They will not rest until they have completely annihilated Shirk in Allah’s Hakimiyyah.

The crowds humbling themselves before tombs – pleading, begging and humbling themselves to their occupants – do not shake them. They will not rest until a idol or tomb remains which is worshiped besides Allah. They will not try to develop “understanding” with the grave worshipers or be affectionate towards them or try to accommodate them (with in the limits of justice) unless they give up their Shirk.

The virtually limitless military, economic and technological strength of the Kuffar doesn’t overwhelm them. They do not rely on anything for victory except Allah. They rush to martyrdom and compete with each other in it. They will never ally themselves with the kuffar or give their brothers up or abandon the lands of ‘لا إله إلا الله’ to the Kuffar and the Mushrikeen.

They are hated for ‘لا إله إلا الله’. The whole world conspires against them. They are called terrorists, bandits and murderers. Every media outlet portrays their death as a victory and a step towards a better world!

They are tortured for ‘لا إله إلا الله’. The women among them are raped in dark prisons. Their cries do not go beyond the walls. The men among then are attacked by dogs. They are forced to walk naked while their torturers enjoy.

They fight for ‘لا إله إلا الله’ and are fought for it. They do not want anything of this world. They fight so that the Word of Allah is raised highest. Wherever they raise this call, they are attacked with the full might of Shirk. Yet, they persist in the way of Allah.

They die for ‘لا إله إلا الله’. Indeed, anyone not willing to die for ‘لا إله إلا الله’ – any one hesitating to give his life for the sake of ‘لا إله إلا الله’ has not tasted its sweetness.
